In what astronomy insiders are tipping to be one of the biggest recent shake- ups in the planetary system, Uranus and Pluto are expected to sign a merger deal which would see them become one fully
integrated planet.
The two planets have been in secret talks for nearly six months, and an announcement on the likely merger could be made as early as next week, after some of the remaining legal details are finalised.
The deal follows Pluto’s ongoing struggle to compete in an increasingly volatile solar system. A spokesman for the planet said the universe has become much tougher for smaller planets in recent years, and that Pluto was basically faced with the option of either merging or going under.
Representatives from both parties say the new planet, to be named PluRanus, will be a serious player in the expanding cosmos market, hoping to pose a real challenge to galaxy competitors like Neptune and Jupiter.
Both planets have promised there’ll be no job losses as a result of the merger, but said some of Pluto’s moons may have to be relocated or made redundant.
