Warning: this story of self-sacrifice and bravery may make you shed a tear.
As the NSW government claims everyone lacks the ‘context’ needed to criticise the police’s actions at last night’s protest while also refusing to give said ‘context’, we decided to speak to one wounded officer to hear his story.
“I don’t know if I am ready to relive this trauma,” said 35 year old Richard Swine, “but I will hold strong like I did last night.”
“First, I was just doing my thing shoving people, punching anyone who looked at me funny. You know, crowd control, deescalation, blah blah blah.”
“But then at one point I was struck with a powerful sound of a child inexplicably crying, and walking. Not just walking though, walking too slow, making him an even bigger threat to my safety.”
“Sadly, I was not near the ear destroying device, to hit him not me obviously, so in that split second I had to reach for what I could went for the pepper spray. Thankfully I managed to do so in time, getting the little shit right in the eyes.”
“I was then yelling ‘thats what you get’ when tragedy struck. No one told me that the longer you press down the wider the range of effect, I had been struck in the eye through no fault of my own.”
“Luckily I was able to run to safety, by pushing an old lady out of my way and onto the ground. It stung, but I made it out alive. Safe from what that child did to me.”
In response to his brave story, NSW Premier Chris Minns labelled Swine as a ‘hero’ and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Swine will be in contention for an Order of Australia for his efforts towards social cohesion.
