Burke clarifies proposal to ban people from Middle East coming to Australia wont apply if they’re good at sport

Immigration minister Tony Burke has cleared up some confusion regarding the bill the government is trying to rush through to allow them to block people from ‘select countries’ in the Middle East from coming to Australia even if they have a visa in response to the war Australia backs.
Many have questioned the timing of the proposal as the government is currently being rightfully praised for offering the Iranian football team a safe way to stay out of Iran due to threats from the Iranian regime, offering the kind of basic human decency to the players that this bill is trying to stop from happening again.
“We are not being hypocritical,” defended Burke, “we obviously have put in an exemption for those who are good at sport.”
“We will only use this power to block people from places like Iran legally coming here in specific situations, like any that we can’t use as a photo-op.”
“Those wanting to come here on holiday, to see family, or flee prosecution are more than welcome to if they can kick a ball to prove that their life is worth respecting.”
