Show creator, Chas Bromhead, said the idea came about following response to the judges in first series.
“We kind of expected the audience’s love-hate reaction to the singers,” said Chas. “But no one ever guessed how much everyone would hate the judges. And where there’s hate, there’s a reality TV show.”
Chas said only people with really special talents have what it takes to be a Popstars judge.
“The pressure on judges are enormous: they must be people who can watch a video and chew a pen at the same time,” he said. “They must also be able to nod their head knowledgeably and act as if they’re interested in anything other than what sexual favours they can get out of the contestants.”
When asked what happened to the previous judges, Chas said, “I don’t know – last I saw them heading in the general direction of Bardot. But I expect to catch up with Jackie O again soon – based on careers of Tania Zaetta and Emma Harrison, her Playboy spread should be due out any day soon.”
Chas denied the new Popstars was a desperate attempt to pump life in a flagging concept.
“Hey, there’s been no decline – this show was creatively bankrupt from the word go,” he said. “The only reason I’m dragging it out as long as possible is to settle all those sexual harassment lawsuits.”
