Representatives for the AFL men’s league have once again put out a statement condemning the actions of those involved with the sport, this time following rape jokes made by GWS players at an event. This announcement was special for the league as it is the 50th time they have denied having a cultural problem this year.
In order to save time, the league has given us a copy of their condemnation letter template for us to fill in for all future controversies:
“We at the AFL believe the actions by (Insert player, coach or commentator’s name/names here).”
“Sport is a place for all to feel safe and welcome to spend their money with us. There is no place for misogyny/racism/homophobia/transphobia/ableism/gendered violence here at The AFL.”
“That is why this year we (insert tokenistic publicity stunt here) and next year we will do it again, unless we don’t want to.”
“To show how seriously we take this issue, we have decided to issue those involved with a slap on the wrist fine/a time out/saying ‘hey knock it off’ while pointing at them. We hope this fixes everything and you all stop criticising us.”
In response to the disgusting behaviour, there was quick condemnation by athletes and journalists in the space, almost exclusively from the women. Meanwhile most the men in the space either chose to defend the players or stay completely quiet. Something we are also told is “not a reflection on the culture”.
