Nation confident in ability to guess the alleged bomber’s race based on lack of ‘terrorist’ label

As Australians are left in horror following the lack of coverage of the attempted bombing of an Invasion Day protest in Perth, many around the nation are pretty sure we can guess the race of the unnamed alleged attacker based on his ability to avoid the ‘terrorist’ label.

While the dictionary may suggest that terrorism is when anyone uses unlawful violence for political means, many understand that the application of the term becomes impacted by ‘other factors’, especially in the sort of country that refuses to reckon with its own racism to the point where an Invasion Day protest is needed.

For example, while many may reasonably look at a bomb being thrown at a protest as an ‘alleged terrorist attack’, if the media and politicians get antsy with the term, its usually a giveaway that the suspect is as white as the average newsroom editor or political party leader.

The race of those being targeted can also typically be predicted by the watering down of language when describing the attack. For example if a ‘potential mass casualty event using a bomb’ is described as just ‘an alleged incident involving a device’, that sort of ‘nothing to see here, let’s talk about something else’ mentality is usually reserved for when the attacks happen against Indigenous Australians. With politicians, the media and police getting decades of practice by ignoring First Nations deaths in custody.

Bookies have said they will not pay out any bets on the alleged perpetrators race until offical confirmation, either by the public release of his identity or when the media starts talking about his ‘mental health’.
